We spent about 2 1/2 hours at Charles Fort with an exceptional tour guide (Patrick or Padrick) providing us with a wealth of history and anecdotes. The fort was named after King Charles II and was built between 1681 and 1683 by William Robinson and James Archer. It was constructed in a star-shaped design which made it easier to defend; at one time it housed 100+ cannons. Charles Fort was only attached once in 1690, and in 1922 it burned to the ground. It was periodically occupied with long periods of abandonment -- It was occupied during the English civil war, as well as during both WWI and WWII. Interestingly enough, it was last occupied by a hippie commune in the late 1960's and early 1970's!
