Skibbereen Heritage Center, Skibbereen, County Cork (West) — Ireland
The Skibbereen Heritage Center was located just across the street from our hotel. It was built recently as a ceremonial exhibition to honor those who suffered and/or died during "the Great Famine." Skibbereen was at the center of news reports in the states during the Great Famine which occurred between 1845 and 1852. The effects of the famine on this small town (and all of Ireland) can be felt even today. Mass graves containing over 10,000 local residents are located at the edge of town. While in the Heritage Center we also watched a short film about the Ine Visitor Center, Ireland's first ever marine nature reserve — totally unrelated to the Heritage Center, but very interesting! (Note: the last picture is that of a "Soup House" right across the street from our hotel where tens of thousands of bowls of soup were served to local residents during the Great Famine.
