Mizen Head Signal Station in Goleen, County Cork (West) -Ireland
We were on the road by 10:00 am this morning headed for Mizen Head Signal Station. We drove down Mizen Head Peninsula in awe of the breathtaking views, then walked to the point (over the bridge) to see the view from the signal station. Mizen Head is Ireland's most southwesterly point! The station was established in 1909 as a fog signal station. The radio beacon was first used in 1931 and the light was lit for the first time in 1959. The station is 54m above high water and the light has a range of 16 miles. The arched bridge is 172' long, 150' high, and looks south toward the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse.
